Oil Spill Resources for Teachers and Students

A new blog has been launched to provide teachers and students with information and classroom activities about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  The blog includes educational resources to help teachers plan lessons about the spill and about the effects it could have on our environment.

Fairhope K-1 teacher Charlene Dindo began receiving questions from both teachers and students almost immediately after the oil started leaking into the Gulf.  Students want to know what happened and what it means for the wildlife they’ve learned about.  Then they want to know what will be done to clean this up.

Hundreds of students go to the Pelican’s Nest Science Center each year to learn about the wildlife and habitats along Mobile Bay.  When they see these same areas on the evening news with reports of this disaster, they will have questions.  The oil spill blog is a way for teachers to share ideas and find resources to help explain this to students and answer their questions.

Every post on the blog can accept comments and questions to allow for interaction and sharing of ideas.  There’s also a specific question and answer page where students can post any questions they have about the oil spill.
