Five Basic Apps for the iDevice.

compatibilityOver the past year many teachers in Baldwin County have received or purchased some type of iDevice (e.g. iPad2, iPod touch). As teachers start using these devices, one of the most common questions that arises is “What applications do I need to download for my device?” While each teacher might have different ideas about what Apps might work with their students, there are five Apps that can be used by every child using an iPad2 or iPod Touch.

Pages: Pages is a combination of a word processor like Microsoft Word and a desktop publishing program like Microsoft Publisher. With this App students will be able to create any type of written document just like they were sitting at the computer.

Keynote: With Keynote, which is similar to PowerPoint, students can create presentations that are visually stunning and allow them to communicate their knowledge gained from a lesson.

Numbers: Spreadsheets can be a scary topic for most teachers let alone students. With Numbers for the iPad students can enter data, run calculations, and graph results. It’s a fantastic App for teaching students how to interpret data.

Garageband: Garageband allows students to record their voice to make a podcast or create music for their own songs. This powerful App has great editing features that allow you to make precise changes in projects. With Garageband you can now give students more choices when deciding what type of project they would like to do for an assignment. If they are tired of making “PowerPoint” type presentations maybe a podcast would be more up their alley.

iMovie: iMovie allows students who have iPad2’s to create movies using only the iPad2. Before having the iPad2, you typically needed a separate video recording device, such as a camera, and then a computer to import the video files for editing. The iPad2 now combines all that into one. The video you shoot can be put into the editor in one simple step.

All of these Apps do have a price. While there may be Apps out there for free that do the same thing, I have not found any that perform as well or give you as many options as these five. You can find out more about each App by clicking the links below.

  1. Is there anyway we can be able to let the students take the STAR reading and math tests on the I-pads? We would have to have flash, I think. I already loaded the Ren. REading app- but that is only for testing on the books.
I am a Special Ed. Teacher and we have to give our low kids that test every week and I thought the I-pads would give them a little incentive to make testing more fun.
    Thanks, Gina East

  2. Jeremy,
I have deleted my iTunes app and my store app off one of mt student iPads. I did not realize I could not easily get it back on. I honestly did not really realize what I did until too late. Can you tell me how to get these back on so that I can put more apps on here? Thanks so much……

  3. Gina,

You are correct about the AR App. I am looking at that right now. You are also correct that if the web site uses flash you can’t view it on an iPad. Right now I haven’t heard of any plans to bring those tests to an App platform.

    Bonnie,

I have never been able to delete my iTunes app nor my Apps store accounts. They don’t have the X when you hold them down. I think you might have just moved them to another page. You might try swiping left and right until you find them.
