    How will the oil effect our weather Like rain

  • Pelican's Nest // May 5, 2010 at 3:19 pm

    @tristan
    Once the oil is on shore, then when it rains it will likely runoff back into our rivers, bays and the Gulf Of Mexico.

    Those are all good questions that many people are asking right now and we don’t know all the answers. Check out the links to look for specific information, read the newspaper and watch the news. If this is a classroom set of questions the teacher may want to assign a group of students to research and think about possible solutions.

    How harmful are the dispersants? What are the short term effects on the environment; long term effects?

  • Pelican's Nest // May 7, 2010 at 11:50 am

    @Tuesday Class
    Here are two recent articles regarding dispersants and the effects. This process still leaves many questions.

    How long will it take to clean up the oil?

  • notforyoutoknow! // May 10, 2010 at 10:15 am

    the last oil spill took about 10 years to clean up and they said that this one is the worse one yet so that means probaly about 25 years or so but dont put that on your paper!

  • iwashereb4u // May 10, 2010 at 10:16 am

    @notforyoutoknow

    Thank you…. but i don’t think i could go 25 years without going the beach.

  • Caitlin // May 10, 2010 at 10:18 am

    @iwashereb4u
    25 years with out going to the beach?

    Just thinking about it seems scary…

  • urface // May 10, 2010 at 10:19 am

    @caitlin

    yeah i can’t live without the beach.

  • gr8123 // May 10, 2010 at 10:25 am

    Ok, this is not a natural disaster for those who think this. This is what happens when we aren’t careful. What we do already hurts the environment, but now the animals. Pelicans for example, they were close to extinction a couple years ago, now their habitat is in ruins. This is something we can all predict would happen. We can prevent this with better people in control of the ships, etc. but one main way is to stop using so much oil and be a little original. I’m not a tree hugger but this has gone to insanity. After all we have done, they still want to burn and pollute the oil even more? What are people thinking? What’s going on with people these days?

  • notforyoutoknow! // May 10, 2010 at 10:25 am

    it could take more than 25 years and about 2,000,000,000 have died and if you go to th beach you are going to see the animals all over the beach suffering and i would not go considering i have never been anyway but and also i am a big animal lover and to see all those animals i could not do it because yeah!

  • Pelican's Nest // May 11, 2010 at 5:56 pm

    @jb1
    Different states have different regulations about which waters can be open for fishing or closed or open for shrimping or closed. Each state is checking the water quality to determine when and where fishing can take place. Nobody wants to eat fish that taste like the oil.

  • Pelican's Nest // May 11, 2010 at 6:01 pm

    @anonymous
    No one really knows how long the leak will take to repair. Nothing like this has ever happened before.
    There is no way to ‘tally’ all the animals that have been affected or will die. This is very frustrating.

  • Pelican's Nest // May 11, 2010 at 6:05 pm

    @caitlin
    Kids today will look at this oil disaster and be motivated to find other solutions so we will not have to face this problem again. Kids can write letters to BP, the Alabama Governor or their congressman and voice their concerns and even the the President of the United States! Some school kids have already sent letters.

  • Pelican's Nest // May 11, 2010 at 6:08 pm

    @gr123
    You are right, a lot of different people and different organizations are coming at this problem at many different angles! Even as many times as we have been through hurricanes along the Gulf Coast the response time to Katrina was not where it should have been. But people also need to take responsibility. We take for granted the oil and energy we use in our country. Can we change our priorities?

  • Marissa // May 13, 2010 at 9:43 am

    Why can’t Bp hurry up and clean this up?

  • Anonymous // May 13, 2010 at 9:44 am

    Will the oil spill effect our school system any?

  • kolby // May 20, 2010 at 12:23 pm

    hey my name is kolby I was wondering how many fish have died from this the oil spill

  • Selena // May 28, 2010 at 8:39 pm

    it doesnt make sense we have gone to space and invented ipods and computers and cell phones we have had 2 world wars and survived but we cant clean up an oil spill that we didnt even make? thats wrong.

  • Molly // May 29, 2010 at 1:04 am

    I agree selena

  • Pelican's Nest // May 31, 2010 at 4:21 pm

    @marissa
    Everyone wants this oil mess cleaned up and in a ‘hurry!’ The problem is they can clean up one area and the oil will go to a different area or the oil can contaminate the same area that has already been cleaned and the process will have to start all over again. Do you have any ideas?

  • Pelican's Nest // May 31, 2010 at 4:28 pm

    @anonymous
    Sure this oil spill will affect the BCBE school system! A 1 cent sales tax was recently passed for a three year term to help the schools. If people don’t come to the coast for their vacation and spend money, there will not be as much tax monies collected as anticipated. This will mean less monies for our schools. There will be other ways the oil spill will affect our schools. What do you anticipate happening?

  • Pelican's Nest // May 31, 2010 at 4:34 pm

    @kolby
    That is a good question! There is no way to know how many fish have died or how many will die! Scientists will be able to make estimates based on past data. The information and research marine scientists are involved in will be real important in answering your question. Scientists at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab have years of information on fish in Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Pelican's Nest // May 31, 2010 at 4:55 pm

    @selena
    All of your comments make sense! How can we do such amazing things in the past and not have the technology and all the right tools and expertise to quickly solve this problem! Students today will need to study a variety of subjects and be independent thinkers to find solutions to future problems and be able to anticipate new issues and be prepared. Right now there are probably students everywhere trying to think about how to fix this oil leak under the ocean and learning about all of the issues that are involved in working underwater at great depths and what is involved in extracting oil from under the sea floor.

  • olivia // Jun 1, 2010 at 10:40 pm

    What about our summer?What about our beaches,when will we get to go swimming in gulf? What about the seafood industries?Will they all close and never eat seafood again thats what most people think.?
    Its scary to even think about it.=(

  • Pelican's Nest // Jun 2, 2010 at 5:59 am

    @olivia
    Your summer activities will probably change some and you may spend more time in swimming pools or maybe at a river rather than swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. Stay informed by watching the news, reading the newspaper or visiting links such as those on this blog. We all are worried about the seafood industry and you are right it is a scary thought to think how much our way of life can change. Maybe you can think of some things that can be done in the future about how to solve some of these problems. :)

  • KYLE // Jun 2, 2010 at 8:33 pm

    I dont get it the president of the USA said he was incharge but BP is still making the rules. Ok I know were the leak is it is still pritty deep but I dont get why they cant send a submarine down there and get it fixed.And why cant they turn the pumping off. =l

  • Pelican's Nest // Jun 3, 2010 at 8:30 pm

    @KYLE
    Yes, this whole issue with the oil spill is confusing about who is ‘in charge’ not only for kids but for adults as well! The submersibles are operated on the surface at computer stations and it takes a minimum of three people to manipulate from what I understand. Imagine looking at something in 2D but trying to maneuver in 3D! This takes experience and expertise. There is no valve below the ocean floor to turn the oil off.

  • Carolyn Lee Mellott // Jun 4, 2010 at 8:51 am

    all I can say is you all really did this time being so greedy for oil,and the only idea I have to stop this oil leak is it,s going to run out someday,and so you will all have to invent something to eat the oil up or filters to clean the ocean, and as for our beloved fish,you can,t pay them back,hope you all have the dna on them,cause there lost forever like my family just about, thanks a million.

  • Jake // Jun 4, 2010 at 6:04 pm

    BP should get a big tanker ship with a big floating vaccum on the back and drive around the spill sucking up the oil.

  • Tyler // Jun 6, 2010 at 12:17 pm

    How many animals have died in the gulf oil spill?

  • Pelican's Nest // Jun 6, 2010 at 8:01 pm

    @Tyler
    Look at the question on May 20 from Jake and the response to how many animals have died. There will be no way to keep an exact count because the Gulf is so large and animals swim around and also move from the top of the water column to the bottom…where we can’t see them.

    it is sad for them I was sad when I heard about it.

  • Pelican's Nest // Jun 27, 2010 at 6:22 am

    @Karen
    Utilize maps and the internet that have diagrams to explain what happened and what the next steps are that BP/others propose. Help make connections to why people/companies drill for oil such as the need to replace the oil in a car or certain machinery. Do you recycle used motor oil? Are your kids involved in purchasing oil at the auto store and understand the process? Discuss reusing/recycling newspaper, plastics and glass.
    Help them make connections to the many jobs/careers involved in this issue before the explosion and after such as chemists, engineers, technicians, biologists, meteorologists, oceanographers, robotics, etc. Involve them in solving problems at home and allow some exploration as to why things will or will not work. Check out books at the library or look on line for simple experiments/investigations with kitchen ingredients they can try with adult supervision. Ask them to write about what they are feeling and how they would do things differently. Helping them express their frustration and sadness will let them know you care and are concerned also.

  • Pelican's Nest // Jun 27, 2010 at 6:24 am

    @Jake
    Have you seen the big ship called the “Whale” that is going to try and come into the Gulf and help? This will be very interesting to watch!

  • Pelican's Nest // Jun 27, 2010 at 6:28 am

    @Christy
    Many people want to help and have to take training or a class. The oiled wildlife is only being cleaned up through a subcontractor called “Tri-State” and the public is advised not to pick up oil. Even living here on the Gulf Coast there is not much we can physically do to help. We have had several beach cleanups to help remove litter before the oil washes over it. Just keep up with the news and recycle and reuse items where you live. Thanks!

  • Pelican's Nest // Jun 27, 2010 at 6:31 am

    @Christy
    The oiled animals are cleaned by a company called “Tri-State” which is subcontracted through BP. The public is advised not to pick up oil, only trained volunteers. Do what you can to recycle and reuse items where you live and just keep up with the news for now. Thanks!
